1974 Masi Gran Criterium

One of the so called "California" Masi Gran Criteriums and therefore part of a very interesting story in itself which can be found in other places on the internet. In regards to this particular bike it was in 1998 Jim was in NYC thinking there just had to be some prize vintage bikes hiding around somewhere but actually not finding much until he came across this one in a very old shop on the lower East side of Manhattan. The owner had this buried way in the back and essentially would not let Jim leave until he bought the bike (for a very good deal). Jim got to ride it in Central Park and over the Brooklyn Bridge but wouldn't necessarily recommend riding in Manhattan on a regular basis.
In the process of restoration Jim located elusive period correct, early model Campy Super Record components. The highlight of the restoration however was the trip to the late Brian Baylis and his shop in San Diego. Brian, a member of the original California Masi group in San Diego in the early 70s immediately recognized his touches in the filing of the lugs. He repainted the frame in original paint and used original decals, both of which he had saved from his days with Masi. Perhaps the only flaw in the master work was Jim's later realization that Brian, who tended to undervalue his extreme expertise, had probably undercharged Jim who later, without any solicitation, mailed Brian an extra check! The bike is for sale to a good home.
